The purpose of this course is to examine the origins and development of contemporary political concepts and values such as state, legitimacy, common good, political regimes, freedom, social contract, political order and so forth. The course is not limited to the Western Political Thought, but also tackles with different other geographical and cultural areas, such as ancient Middle Eastern, Indian or Chinese political ideas.
The course has three main objectives: 1. To initiate the students to the origins and development of modern political ideas and concepts; 2. To familiarize the students with the political thought of classical authors such as Plato, Aristotle, Kautilya, Confucius, St. Augustin, Machiavelli, Montesquieu, Morus, etc; 3. To help students to gain a meningful insight regarding different assumptions and ideas concerning the nature of politics.
